On NOBEL Prizes: Obama, Müller, Palin

As a Romanian-American, I am happy that Romanian-born Hertha Müller won the Nobel prize for Literature.

Now I would like to read her books, especially the ones written in Romania.  She was born about 50 km from where I was born.

As a Romanian- American I am puzzled that Obama won the Nobel prize for Peace.

The following quote from Bill Kristol captures something of both of these events rather well – :):):

News flash — Sarah Palin will be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. No one has read her book yet, but there are a lot of people who are excited about it and inspired by the thought of it, and so they will retract the prize from that Romanian and give it to her.”

Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.  After all – I am really happy that Hertha won it! 🙂

Obama in the Middle East – Is Peace Possible?

Obama is in the Middle East trying to mend relations with a part of the world that very much hates us.  The first stop was in Saudi Arabia – without doubt one of the most repressive countries in the world, a country with almost zero religious freedom (rivaled only by North Korea).

As one who lived in a muslim country (Indonesia), with a more colorful background that W, he is supposed to be more qualified to mend relations with this part of the world, and understand better Islam.  One only hopes that is the case.

My view is much more pessimistic about Obama’s knowledge of Islam and the Middle East, and also about the possibilities for peace.

I wrote a while back about PEACE in Islam (see the article rubric above) and my conclusions were not very encouraging.  I hope I am wrong.  Here, I will point out a few things and I would like to hear/read some opposing views.

Hating Hillary?

As we were studying and discussing Jesus’ demand to love our enemies I ran into a problem.  I could not find any enemies.  I considered it out of the question that there were enemies out there who were enemies because I hated them, so I tried to think if there were some who hated me.  And I could not find any.  I am not aware of any people that hate me and that consider themselves my “enemies.”  There may be some (?), I just don’t know who they are.

This morning, however, I read a short note on Hillary Clinton and the issue of faith in the Democratic camp (see  here). It pointed me to an editorial in Christianity Today titled ” “Hating Hillary: Getting to the bottom of a cultural trend that has seeped into the church.” You can find the editorial  here.
